Why do you love it?
Every day is different and takes you by surprise. You’ll come to work thinking you have a plan, but you don’t because something else will come up that takes priority. Like this morning, I sat with a tearful elderly resident who’s been a victim of anti-social behaviour, then this afternoon I was outside kicking about a football with a bunch of kids. It’s great to be able to give something back to a town I’ve lived in most of my life. I can go home at night knowing I’ve done something to improve the lives for local residents. I’ve helped to make their neighbourhoods cleaner, safer, more enjoyable places to live.
What if there were no neighbourhood wardens?
A lot of vulnerable people would be forgotten or not even recognised. Not only old people, but some young adults and children would go unnoticed too. Other agencies just don’t have the scope to get out there and address things like low-level crime, nor the resources to meet with victims of anti-social behaviour, to sit with them and reassure them. These things would simply get missed.
